Members of the Working Group on BIM (Building Information Model or Building Information Modeling), an initiative of the Construction Industry Department of the Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo (Fiesp), met to specifically discuss this type of technology that allows the virtual construction of buildings in three dimensions, before they are actually erected.
According to consultant Sérgio Leusin, one of the guests at the meeting, large Brazilian construction companies are already beginning to implement the technology. "What is happening in Brazil is similar to what is happening in France, where companies are pressuring the government for the implementation of BIM." Leusin pointed out some recommendations that he considers necessary for a successful implementation of the technology. "In Brazil, we have pre-BIM guidelines that can be updated to incorporate BIM."“
Furthermore, he stated that it is urgent to establish regulations between the parties bound by the contract regarding intellectual property, rights and duties between the parties, as well as defining the role of the BIM information manager. Another point highlighted is the need for training teachers with technical knowledge in this new area.
According to Mohamed Kasem, who compared BIM policies between Brazil and five European Union members (Finland, Norway, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and France), the construction industry is undergoing a paradigm shift in several countries. Kasem stated that the United Kingdom is at a more advanced stage in BIM implementation, with well-developed digital libraries. The only area where Brazil performs well is in information technology infrastructure. "The United Kingdom is, among these nations, the most advanced, and is ahead of Brazil and France in terms of BIM implementation," he affirmed.
The CEO of CADBIM – Rodrigo Mioni, attended the FIESP BIM Working Group and assessed the importance and topics covered: “Not only national design companies and owners, but also the material manufacturers themselves need a better introduction to the subject and an understanding of its importance within the design, construction, and assembly ecosystem. Without events like this, integration among all those involved becomes very difficult.”.
